Murals in Hawaii

During my trip back home to Honolulu this Christmas, a friend suggested a stroll starting at the Mother Waldron Playground in Kaka’ako. As a kid, I remember driving to the area to help my dad pick up office supplies and get the car serviced. It wasn’t much beyond that. Turns out there’s a lot going on in this industrial part of town now.

Kaka’ako has become a really vibrant neighborhood and I wish I had more time to experience it. There are walls covered in murals along several streets. A full map can be found at the website for Pow Wow Hawai’i, a group which encourages collaboration from the artist community at annual week long Pow Wow events. You can check out photos from previous Pow Wows and get involved with the upcoming 2013 Pow Wow scheduled for February 9-16 on their site.

There is also an active foodie and craft artist community growing through the popularity of the monthly Honolulu Night Market. I’ve been watching this grow through their communications on Twitter and really wish I had been able to participate while I was visiting.

It was a great visit home and I should have more images to share soon. Mahalo!
